It seems like everyone just says “the first trimester is the first 12 weeks,” but is that really accurate? I keep reading slightly different numbers—some say it’s 13 weeks, some say it depends on how you count from the last menstrual period (LMP) or from conception. OBs at my clinic seem to round it off and don’t get into the details, but it doesn’t seem totally agreed on.
Does it actually matter if it’s 12 weeks or 13? Are there clinical reasons to be precise about this? Does it affect screening, treatment, or how risk is managed? Or is it more of a calendar convention? Would love to hear from anyone who has looked into the reasoning behind this, not just the “that’s how it’s always done” answer.
